The Skipper and Gilligan, Mutt and Jeff, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and more recently and gender correct Laverne and Shirley. All incredible duos, who can spark a smile just by the mention of their names and provoke full-blown belly laughs just by watching them together. We seem to provoke something by our mere presence, mostly odd gazes. Lori is 4’2” by Seal’s guesstimate, actually 5”3” with brown hair and eyes true to her Italian heritage. She describes herself as stumpy, or is it lumpy? I’m not sure. Seal is 5’10” and shrinking (that happens with age, just height not waist), blonde and blue eyed true to her Irish heritage. Seal doesn’t necessarily feel tall when she is walking next to Lori, and Lori refers to Seal as her “ Little Buddy”. It’s amazing that we share such a friendship for as many years as we have because we are opposites in so many ways. For instance, a meal to Seal would be a Reese’s and a chocolate milkshake and a slice of pie. Lori on the other hand would have meat and pasta and a whole lot of (Seal would say yucky) vegetables and fresh fruit. Lori is also mushy, emotional and affectionate, and there doesn’t have to be a birth, death or crisis to bring it out. Seal on the other hand cringes at hugging, holding or expressing her inner warmth (see story entitled Cuddly as a Pineapple).
There are many examples of our physical and emotional differences. Lori has “caliones”…Italian slang for balls (we aren’t sure if you can say that in a blog). Seal however, for all 5’10 “ of her is a very large marshmallow. Intimidation is in appearance only. She is afraid of a small field mouse…once she almost jumped into Lori’s arms at the sight of one.
Over the course of our friendship, and over many years, we have affectionately given each other a long list of nicknames. If anyone finds any of these offensive, they are not meant to be. True best friends often belt out names like these without fear of repercussions.
